NSFI and PNVSCA Seal Partnership to Champion Volunteerism for Sustainable Development

In a joint effort to address child malnutrition and strengthen community well-being, Nature’s Spring Foundation, Inc. (NSFI) partnered with World Vision to host a Nutrition Month event on July 8, 2025, at 2:00 PM, held at Umapad Day Care Center III in Mandaue City.

The afternoon featured family planning and spiritual nourishment sessions, followed by growth monitoring for children, a communal meal, and the distribution of rice sacks and vegetable seeds—simple tools families can use to build healthier meals at home.

The initiative is part of World Vision’s Urban Development Project (UDP), a special program supported by World Vision Singapore. According to Project Officer Rey Angelo B. Dahonan, the UDP operates through three outcomes: health and nutrition, education and life skills for children, and Project HOPE, which equips out-of-school youth for employment or entrepreneurship.

“Ang gi-address jud ani na program kay sa underweight na mga bata wherein daghan ta na-identify through sa ‘Operation Timbang’ of DOH. Mga underweight, so gi-enroll nato sila sa feeding sessions nato sa ‘Urban Nutrition Hub.” (“This program addresses underweight children, many of whom we’ve identified through the Department of Health’s ‘Operation Timbang.’ We enroll them in our feeding sessions at the Urban Nutrition Hub.”)

Dahonan stressed the importance of early intervention:

“So kibaw naman gud ta na kung ang underweight na mga bata dili ma-nourish ug maayo at the very beginning, naa siyay effect sa brain development, cognitive development sa mga bata. So at the start pa lang, ato na gi-address para sa pag-grow nila, para dili na kaayo problema sa community, dili na siya problema sa ginikanan ang ilang development.” (“If underweight children are not nourished early on, it affects their brain and cognitive development. We intervene at the start so their growth doesn’t become a long-term challenge for their families and community.”)

He also pointed to nutrition gaps that arise in urban settings, where fast food and sugary drinks are far more accessible than fresh, healthy meals. Children may be well-fed but poorly nourished

World Vision’s mission, he noted, continues to center on those most at risk—children whose well-being depends on parents often facing financial and educational limitations. Addressing child nutrition in this context isn’t just about one meal; it’s about giving families consistent access to knowledge, tools, and support that allow their children to thrive.

By partnering with NSFI—whose mission is to improve the lives of every Filipino—this event was a concrete reminder that care for children begins with everyday access to food, family support, and informed communities. Addressing malnutrition is a community task—and it begins with acts of nourishment, both practical and profound.
