Mothers in Mandaue City Thank Nutrition Classes that Transformed their Children’s Health
In May 2025, World Vision and Nature’s Spring Foundation, Inc. signed a contract to help address undernutrition among children in Mandaue City through the Positive Deviance/Hearth approach.
The partnership aims to advance children’s health and nutrition, and the care practices of primary caregivers through nutritional classes. The approach also promotes long-term solutions through behavior change, community engagement, and the utilization of existing resources.
“The program has been very helpful,” says Gina, a mother of four, who’s one of the participants. “It helps a lot of children, and us as parents as well. I’ve learned how to better manage my child’s diet, and prepare healthier food choices. It made a big difference because my child’s weight has improved and their appetite has become better. I’ve witnessed how other children’s health has improved, too,” she says. “I am grateful to Nature Spring Foundation and World Vision for helping children. I hope there’ll be more children they can support,” she adds. Aside from nutritional classes that include training caregivers on how to prepare low-budget meals, participating families were also given sacks of rice every month for the duration of the project, vitamins on day 1, and garden supplies such as seeds, shovel and garden soil for our urban gardening local food production.“I am really glad to have been part of the program. Thanks to World Vision and Nature’s Spring Foundation, Inc., because of them, I’ve learned so much. The vitamins my children have been taking have also truly helped that their weight has improved because they have the appetite to eat,” says Janeth, a mother of two. Janeth also shares that because of the nutrition classes, her children learned and started to like eating vegetables. Through sustainable interventions like these, children have a better chance to grow healthy and well-nourished while also involving their families. ###
